Waring music teachers will be busy in July and August performing at several events.

On July 22 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Cellist Instructor Kristen Miller will perform cello, sing, and share poetry at Hamilton House in South Berwick, ME, as part of the Sundays in the Garden Series.

On July 22 at 8:00 p.m. Tiffany Baxter, chair of Waring's performing arts department, will perform works of Leonard Bernstein at Annisquam Village Church in Gloucester.

On August 1 at 7:00 p.m. Clarinet Instructor Susan Burnett-Halling will perform with her husband and daughter at the Hatch Shell in Boston as part of the Boston Landmarks Orchestra Concert Series.

On August 2 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Jay Miele, Waring’s Jazz Ensemble Leader, will perform with his band SoulCity at the Crane Estate in Ipswich.

On August 24 from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Kristen Miller will again perform as part of a sound-healing meditation at the First Religious Society Unitarian Universalist Church in Newburyport.

Elizabeth Patrick '19, who led Waring Lacrosse with 59 goals this spring, was named to Boston Herald's All-Scholastic 2018: Prep/Private Team. Elizabeth was one of only four girl lacrosse players from across the state to be honored by the newspaper.

Earlier this spring, Elizabeth was also named lacrosse MVP of the Independent Girls Conference for the third consecutive year.

In the summer, Elizabeth plays for the Mass Elite Lacrosse Team.

This spring, Waring students built a skiff, interviewed political candidates, created a video game, wrote novellas, sewed rompers, travelled to Canada, designed theater sets, programmed robots, studied the World Cup, recreated historical photographs, and pondered the good life as part of a three-week Endterm for grades 6-10. The term is intensive, experiential, and often involves off-campus or travel experiences.

What makes it great? Why does it fit Waring’s core philosophy?

Waring School celebrated the remarkable Class of 2018 at the School’s 39th commencement ceremony on Friday, May 25. All members of the Class will matriculate to four-year colleges or universities and more than half will attend schools ranked in the top 50 by U.S. News and World Report’s 2018 College and University Rankings.

“Seniors, the time has come now to set sail,” said Tim Bakland in his remarks to the graduates. “And even in this age’s most uncertain hour, you are called to soaring flight. May you be well, be yourselves, learn from others like you and others unlike you, create, inspire, and move with grace.”

Outstanding faculty, a challenging liberal arts curriculum, and a school-wide emphasis on community and leadership have helped 29 graduates choose the following renowned colleges and universities to attend this fall.

An impressive 75 Waring students were awarded national laureates from the 2018 Le Grand Concours. Waring francophiles received 1 platinum, 22 gold, 36 silver, and 16 bronze medals for scoring well on the national French contest.

Junior Paul Taylor’s perfect score was the first ever platinum medal for Waring.

In total, 158 Waring students joined more than 85,000 middle and high school students across the United States who participated in the contest that tested oral comprehension, reading, and grammar knowledge.

The Prime Minister of France, upon the recommendation of the French Ministry of Education, has awarded Waring teacher Christiane Jedryka-Taylor the distinction of "Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Academiques" (Knight in the Order of the French Academic Palms) for her outstanding contributions over many years to promote the French language and Francophone culture. This honor is rarely given to secondary school teachers, which makes it all the more significant! Madame Jedryka-Taylor will receive her decoration at a formal ceremony conducted by French Consul General of France in Boston, Mr. Valéry Freland.

Waring Juniors Johanna Couture-Porcaro and Tassy Chen have works nominated for exhibition at The Marble Collection’s fifth annual magazine release gala, Spring into Art, on Sunday, May 20, 2018 from 3:00 – 5:00pm at UMass Boston’s Harbor Gallery. Johanna's work “Lila Jane” and Tassy's "In Orange" were nominated.

Waring Junior Julia Kautz was named a Gold Key recipient in Scholastic Art and Writing regional awards and was then awarded a National Gold Medal. In addition, her work was chosen as one of five works of writing from each region selected by local judges as an American Voices nominee. Then from among those five nominees her work was selected as the winner and one of only a handful of writers in the nation to receive an American Voices Medal.

Join us for our fourth annual Music for Food Soirée to aid hunger relief on Friday, April 13 at 7:30pm in the Theater. All proceeds from this special soirée will go to Beverly Bootstraps via the Music for Food organization, which strives to empower musicians of all ages to use their artistry to alleviate the problems of food insecurity faced by people around the country. There is a $10 suggested donation for a night of amazing student music. Last year Waring raised over $2,250, enough to fund 6,700 meals for food insecure individuals and families in the Beverly community.

Waring had six students represented at the Sixth District Congressional Art Show and Competition at Montserrat College of Art's 301 Cabot Street Gallery, that was on view from March 15-17. A closing reception and award ceremony with Congressman Seth Moulton was held on Saturday, March 17. Elle Zymba was named "Best of Waring School” by the jurors, and awarded a scholarship for study at Montserrat’s Pre-College Program.

At the Mardi Gras debate tournament, held on Saturday, March 3 at Shrewsbury High School, Phoebe Holz & Swara Douglas placed 4th among 93 teams in open varsity competition, going undefeated in preliminary rounds.They qualified for quarterfinals, where they met a very strong varsity team from Newton South. This was a remarkable showing for our novice team, which will also be competing at the Massachusetts State Debate tournament on March 24 at Chelmsford High School. Madeline Boyd also competed with success at the Mardi Gras, as a maverick debater (one who competes without a partner).

Waring Senior Laura Miller won an award for Excellence in Book Arts at the Endicott College High School Art Competition, where there is work from over 100 students. Waring has three students represented at Endicott College’s Annual High School Student Art Competition. The show allows schools to submit three pieces of work, but the three works must be of different media. This year Waring is represented by Asher Leahy (pen and watercolor drawing), Laura Miller (mixed media altered book) and Julia Natale (black and white photography). The show is being judged by Lydia Gordon, Assistant Curator for Exhibitions and Research at the Peabody Essex Museum. The opening and awards ceremony was Thursday, March 1, and the show is up and open to the public from March 1-28 in the Desnoyers Arts Overlook in the Walter J. Manninen Center for the Arts at Endicott College.

Last weekend, the Waring Debate Society competed in the Harvard National Debate Tournament, the largest invitational debate tournament of the year. With over 1700 students and 426 judges participating in 3 divisions of debate, Waring's teams had exceptional success.

In Junior Varsity Debate, the team of Julia Kautz & Anand Fedele had a 5W-1L record in their preliminary rounds and won their first elimination round on Saturday night, having to return for competition on Sunday when they earned their trophy, finishing in the top 32 of 295 teams. Clara Wang & Swara Douglas also competed in Junior Varsity Debate.

Waring debaters Sascha Denby & Gareth Buhl qualified for the National Catholic Forensic League's Grand National Tournament by placing in the top six of teams attending the qualifier, held at Shrewsbury High School on Saturday, February 10. This marks the second time in Waring Debate history that a team has qualified. Because the tournament is held the same weekend as the Waring Graduation, Sascha & Gareth graciously declined the invitation and gave the qualification to a team from Manchester Essex Regional.

On Saturday, February 10, Ten Waring middle school students along with Waring Art teacher KB Breiseth attended the AISNE Middle School Students of Color Conference at the Dana Hall School in Wellesley. It was a chance for students to be part of a larger community conversation about equal access to education and empowerment.

Congratulations to our school winners of the AMC 8 contest run by the Mathematical Association of America. First place Julie Durning, Second place Meg Patrick, and Third place Molly Cruikshank. Each November, more than 100,000 middle school aged students nationwide participate in the contest.

The snow and frigid weather did not prevent the Waring Debate Society from attending the Newton South Winter Festival Debate on Saturday, January 6 where they competed in open Varsity Public Forum Debate on the topic: Resolved – that Spain should grant Catalonia its independence.

Last Saturday, the Waring Debate Society competed in the Lincoln-Sudbury High School Debate Competition and had great success at all levels. The tournament had 112 teams (224 debaters) competing in four rounds of varsity competition. Perhaps the most remarkable performance was by Waring’s novice team of Arion Carraher-Kang & Tucker Smith, who had a record of 3 wins and 1 loss and placed 12th of 112 teams. Tucker won the trophy for 11th place speaker of 224. This was the best showing Waring has had by a novice team in varsity competition.

Waring Debaters Alice Sullivan and Sasha Malley won the varsity division of the Lexington High School Debate tournament yesterday, competing in a field of 68 teams. They went undefeated throughout the tournament, and after five preliminary rounds, squared off against the only other undefeated team, Nightingale-Bamford High School from New York City. On a 5-0 decision of the judges, Alice and Sasha were the champions! Speaker awards in the varsity division (a field of 136 debaters) also went to Sascha Denby (10th) and Julia Kautz (14th). Richard Stewart & Sascha Denby, along with Alice & Sasha also qualified for the State Tournament.

The Waring School Board of Trustees has reached 100% participation in the 2017-18 Waring Fund! This complete Board support reflects the strong commitment of the Trustees to the Head of School, faculty and administration, as well as its strategic vision for the future of Waring.

Waring has 14 students represented in this year's juried Crane Estate Student Art Show and Sale. This year’s theme is "Nature’s Wisdom” and the show will take place on November 4 & 5 from 10:00am-4:00pm in the Casino on the Crane Estate in Ipswich. A portion of any work sold benefits The Trustees of Reservations.

This year’s participating artists are Tano Barendsen-Rossi, Ella Bellin, Eli Biletch, Sascha Denby, Chloé Hupin, Annabel Judy, Phineas Karambis, Asher Leahy, Julia Lewis, Laura Miller, Julia Natale, Ursula Siegfried, Jared Wood, and Jonesy Zhang.

Waring’s novice Debate teams started strong at their season opener held at Arlington High School last Saturday. They competed in a field of 189 debaters from schools all over Massachusetts. Every Waring team won debates, with some placing in the very top tier of the competition.

Waring School’s Head of School, Tim Bakland, announced today that Alice Sullivan, Sascha Denby and Sophie Bereaud have been named Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the Head of School to these scholastically talented seniors.

Writing and Humanities teacher, Joshua Scott-Fishburn, will be part of a joint poetry reading tonight at the Gloucester Writing Center where he will read work written during his teaching sabbatical. He will share the stage with Somerville poet, Ben Berman, whose first book titled Strange Borderlands won the 2014 Peace Corps Award for Best Book of Poetry and was a finalist for the Massachusetts Book Awards. Joshua’s work will feature public-themed poems that include meditations on Gloucester's contemporary culture as it intersects with local and national history as well as private-themed poems focused on the tensions of personal intimacy and alienation. Joshua began working with the GWC over the course of his sabbatical, both as a writer and board member.

The reading will take place tonight, September 13 from 7:30 to 9:00pm. The Gloucester Writing Center is located at 126 East Main Street, Gloucester, MA.

Waring Science teacher John Wigglesworth has received the 2017 Ocean Stewardship Honorable Mention Award from The New England Aquarium. This award recognizes teachers who are passionate about the ocean and who work to promote an ethic of ocean conservation in their classrooms and schools. John’s work with his Earth Science class, Oceans and Climate class, and several ocean-based Endterms exemplifies his work to improve awareness and appreciation of the oceans though a blend of academic and experience-based activities.

John will be recognized at the New England Aquarium’s World Oceans Day event on June 4, 2017 and will also be featured on their website and newsletter. Congratulations John!

The results of Le Grand Concours 2017 are in and are truly impressive with 69 national laureates out of the 150 students present the day of the contest.

Le Grand Concours is the National French Contest for students of French in middle and high school. This year 78,899 students were enrolled, across the US. The competition uses authentic cultural material from a number of francophone countries and tests students’ oral comprehension, reading, and grammar knowledge. The contest places students in different fluency categories depending on their backgrounds to ensure fairness. It takes into account their levels of French, years of study of the language, and also family backgrounds. At Waring, 3 students were placed in the bilingual/bicultural category for their respective levels. The results of their performances were ranked separately.

This year, once again, our students excelled in the Grand Concours. Waring is proud to have 69 national laureates receiving 69 medals: 21 gold (95th percentile), 32 silver (85th or 90th percentile), and 16 bronze (75th or 80th percentile).

Congratulations to Tim Averill, Waring’s Writing teacher and Debate coach, who earned a Sixth Diamond degree of membership in the National Speech & Debate Association's Honor Society!

Diamond coach awards commend excellence and longevity in debate. The First Diamond award is earned when a coach receives 1,500 points and has been coaching in the Association for at least five years since achieving the degree of merit (25 points). Five years must pass between each new diamond award while earning an increased amount of points between each interval. Tim has earned 16,002 points over a coaching career that spans 46 years.

On Tuesday, April 25th, seven Waring students won nine awards in the Beverly Public Library's 21st Annual Teen Poetry Contest. Ilaria Bardini, Sarah Bradshaw, Gareth Buhl, Cole Cunningham, Erik Waxdal, Griffin Wells, and Jemma West read their poems aloud in the Sohier Room of the Beverly Public Library and received their final awards. With 627 entries submitted, only 25 finalists were selected. Waring was strongly represented. Congratulations to our winners!

Waring Students Sophia Bereaud ’18 and Lucy Sinclair ’17, as part of the Boston Children's Chorus, will sing the national anthem today at the 2017 Boston Red Sox season opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Opening Day ceremonies will begin at approximately 1:30pm with the game starting at 2:05pm. Hanscom Air Force Base will present the colors, and then two F-15C's will fly over at the conclusion of the national anthem.

Cutting their Spring Break a bit short, the team of Jack Kelly and Tristan Horan attended the Massachusetts State Debate Tournament, held at Acton Boxborough Regional High School on Saturday, March 25. The tournament was open only to teams that had qualified, and 60 teams participated in Varsity Public Forum Debate. Waring came in 22nd, and Jack Kelly was recognized as 8th place speaker of the 120 debaters who competed.

Waring Senior Jacqui Jutras ‘17 was awarded third place overall in the Endicott College High School Art Competition. This year the show had 80 pieces of art from over 25 high schools, and was juried by Al Miner, a curator at the Museum of Fine Arts. Waring submitted work from Hattie Cookson ‘17 (Photography), Emma Garthwaite ‘17 (Mixed-Media Drawing), and Jacqui Jutras ‘17 (Painting). The show is up until April 7 in the Desnoyers Overlook Gallery at Endicott College.

Waring Junior Asher Leahy ‘18 was awarded Waring’s “Best of School” for his painting Swampscott Sunset at the 6th District Congressional High School Art Competition and Exhibition. He received a citation from Congressman Seth Moulton and a scholarship for Montserrat’s Pre-College Program. Waring School was represented in the annual show by six student artists: Isaac Buxbaum (Photography), Laura Miller (mixed-media Drawing), Asher Leahy (Painting), Julia Natale (Photography), Sarah Malboeuf (Painting), and Elle Zymba (Painting). The show was held at the 301 Gallery at Montserrat College of Art in downtown Beverly.

On Saturday, February 11, eight members of the Waring Debate team attended the Boston Catholic Forensic League's national qualifying tournament, held in Shrewsbury, MA. The competition was very strong due to the winners being invited to attend nationals during Memorial Day weekend in Louisville, KY. Because this conflicts with Waring's graduation, the debate team did not compete to qualify but rather to gain experience, especially for our five 8th graders.

Seniors Jack Kelly and Tristan Horan have qualified for the National Speech and Debate Association's National Tournament, to be held in Birmingham, Alabama, on June 18-23. The qualifying tournament was held last Friday and Saturday in Shrewsbury, MA, and involved the best teams from the New England District. In this double-elimination tournament, Jack and Tristan lost their first debate and then won the next five to join two other teams (from Newton South) in qualifying.

At the Columbia University Debate Tournament held in New York City on January 20-22, Jack Kelly and Sam Lincoln qualified for elimination debates and won their first "outround" before being eliminated from the tournament. Their 4-3 record against the best competition in the region was a very strong showing. Sam and Jack were chaperoned by Bill Lincoln, who also judged for Waring. Waring Alumna, Grace Panetta ’16, was at the tournament as a "host" judge.

Last weekend, ten members of the Waring School Debate Team were at Lexington High School at a truly national-level debate tournament that hosted 153 Public Forum Debate teams (305 debaters) from the best debate programs in the country. Waring brought a range of debaters, from first-time competitors to our most experienced, Jack Kelly, debating alone (which is called mavericking.)

The French Cultural Center Alliance Française of Boston and Cambridge has awarded Waring teacher Maureen Gedney’s school-wide project “Jouons Ensemble” (let’s play together) a grant of $400. The goal of this project is to create a “Jouons Ensemble” forum across the school that will bring together beginners all the way up to the more advanced students.

Waring Debate traveled to Newton South High School on Saturday, January 7 for competition in Public Forum debate. Despite the weather forecast, 79 teams (157 debaters) attended the competition. At the end of the four rounds of debate, Waring senior Tristan Horan was first place speaker! He was followed by Waring Juniors Sascha Denby in tenth and Alice Sullivan at eleventh.

Seniors Jack Kelly and Sam Lincoln were undefeated in 5 preliminary rounds and lost on a 1-2 decision in the final round, in which they debated with excellence. The field was 96 teams (192 debaters). The third place team was Alice Sullivan and Sasha Malley, who were undefeated in preliminaries and ran their record on the current topic to 10 wins and no losses.

Waring faculty member and alumna Edith Fouser ’95 was nominated by Burnt Pine Magazine for the 2017 Pushcart Prize. Edith was one of Burnt Pine’s six nominations for this prestigious literary award. If selected, Edith’s short story “Where I'm From” will be published in The Pushcart Prize XLI: Best of the Small Presses series, which features writers of short stories, poetry, and essays.

Waring School faculty and staff reached 100% participation in the Waring Fund for the second consecutive year! This continuing, unanimous support reflects our faculty’s deep commitment to the success of Waring School, its leadership and its strategic vision for the future. Senior Reid Bradshaw ‘17 and Junior Tano Barendsen-Rossi ’18 attended the National Association for Music Education’s (NAfME)2016 All-National Honor Ensemblesas tenors in the Mixed Choir. This is the first year that Waring School will have multiple participants in this highly selective event. Both Reid and Tano were required to audition and be selected for both Districts and All-State Festivals last year before then being considered for All-Nationals through the submission of a demanding video audition.

On Tuesday, October 24, Waring was visited by the Mexican chapter of Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH), Spanish for "Our Little Brothers and Sisters." Visitors from NPH Mexico spent time with Humanities 1 before taking the stage at All-School Meeting. There they performed traditional Mexican folkloric music and dance, inviting students on stage to participate.

On November 5 and 6 from 10:00am-4:00pm, ten Waring students will take part in the Crane Estate Art Show and Sale: "The Spirit of the Garden." Student artists include Isaac Buxbaum (Photography), Hattie Cookson (Photography), Carly Comparato (Painting), Sascha Denby (Photography), Asher Leahy (Painting), Katerina Pappas (Painting), David Rowse (Photography), Lucy Sinclair (Painting), Hope Younger (Painting) and Jonesy Zhang (Photography). Student work will be featured in the Casino at Castle Hill on the Crane Estate. Art proceeds benefit the artists and The Trustees. Check out The Trustees website for more information.

During their Medieval course, freshmen and sophomore students created a labyrinth with stones from our old courtyard. Check out the Beverly Citizen's article on the labyrinth HERE!

Recently, Waring School’s Earth Science class visited the Sagamore Hill Radio Observatory in Hamilton, MA. Waring teacher John Wigglesworth said “I think it’s important for the kids to gain a perspective of the earth in relation to the sun and to understand that the sun influences the earth in more ways than light and heat.” Sagamore Hill is part of the 2nd Weather Group of the Air Force Weather Agency and is a functional component of the Radio Solar Telescope Network.

The Waring soccer teams are off to a strong start! The girls are 2-0 in conference, while the boys are 1-1. The girls defeated Gann Academy, 1-0

Waring Senior Reid Bradshaw has qualified as a Semifinalist in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship program. As one of approximately 16,000 high school seniors who are Semifinalists, Reid has the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships being offered next spring.

After a busy summer, we are pleased to announce our 2016-2017 Waring Fund goal of $400,000. The Waring Fund supports all aspects of student life including academic programs, arts, athletics and financial aid. Gifts of all sizes are welcome, however, leadership gifts of $1,000 or more make up 80% of Waring Fund dollars. Together we can keep the Waring tradition of extraordinary teaching and learning strong!

Beverly, MA – Waring School partnered with the French Consulate of Boston to host 3 days of workshops for French teachers in the North Shore area and beyond. These free classes were taught by Consulate teachers using Waring’s unique French teaching method. Workshops ran June 20th – 22nd from 9:00am until 4:30pm.

Adele was named MVP of the Independent Girls Conference, while Jacob was named MVP of the Mass Bay Independent League. These two captains will be dearly missed next year. Please see the link below for details.

Congratulations to the boys and girls lacrosse teams. The boys won the Mass Bay Independent League championship while the girls took home the Independent Girls Conference championship this spring. Seniors Liam Boyd and Jacob Vaneck, along with Juniors Josh Gabbay and Michael Ballin were named to the MBIL All Star team. For the girls, Senior Adele MacEwen, Juniors, Hattie Cookson, Kat Pappas and Freshmen, Chloe Hupin, Elizabeth Patrick and Elle Zymba were named to the IGC All Star team.

Tonight, June 6, at 6:30pm at The Cabot, Waring is sponsoring a screening of the great John Ford film, The Searchers, followed by an optional discussion at 8:30pm. The American Film Institute rates it the #1 Western movie of all-time.

On Saturday, April 23, twenty students, parents, and teachers from Waring School gathered for their second community volunteer day with The Food Project of Lynn, MA. Waring’s group worked for 3 hours in The Food Project's Beverly greenhouse on the Glen Urquhart campus to help start the organization's summer gardens, which will provide produce for community-supported agriculture and farmer's markets in the area.

The results of 2016 Le Grand Concours are in and are truly impressive with 67 national laureates out of the 136 students present that day.

Le Grand Concours is the National French Contest for students of French in middle and high school. This year, over 85,000 students were enrolled across the US. The competition uses authentic cultural material from a number of francophone countries and tests students’ oral comprehension, reading, and grammar knowledge. The contest places students in different fluency categories depending on their backgrounds to ensure fairness. It takes into account their levels of French, years of study of the language, and also family backgrounds. At Waring, 3 students were placed in the bilingual/bicultural category for their respective levels. The results of their performances were ranked separately.

Waring School’s very own Janet Heintzman Lindsay was recognized in the Boston Globe’s “Salute to Nurses 2016”. You can read her nomination letters posted by the Boston Globe HERE.

The American Association of Teachers of French has conferred its award of Exemplary French Program on Waring School in April of 2016. Waring School is one of only eight schools in the nation to receive this award. This prestigious award recognizes the outstanding quality of the Waring French program and its unique features, such as the immersion approach, classes taught entirely orally at the beginners level, performances of skits in front of the whole school, and many travel opportunities to French-speaking countries as well as rigorous courses such as AP and Post-AP. The AATF recognizes the consistently strong results of the school on the national French contest, Le Grand Concours, and the enthusiastic dedication of French teachers to their work. Bravo!

On Tuesday, April 26th, seven Waring students won awards in the Beverly Public Library's 20th Annual Teen Poetry Contest. Emma Gramling, Lucy Sinclair, Reid Bradshaw, Autumn Buhl, Louis Quinquis, Benny Weedon, and Luna Schiller read their poems aloud in the Sohier Room of the Beverly Public Library and received their final awards. With 778 entries submitted, only 29 finalists were selected. Congratulations to our winners!

On Friday, April 8th, the Waring School Music for Food Soirée raised more than $1,800 to be donated to Beverly Bootstraps. That’s over $400 more than the 2014 concert! According to the Greater Boston Food Bank each dollar can provide three meals for those in need, meaning the Waring community helped provide over 5,400 meals to those in need.

On Thursday, April 14, Reid Bradshaw, Isaac Buxbaum, Ali Estey, Tristan Horan, Christianna Mostue, and David Rowse attended New Noises – a workshop at Boston University Playwrights’ Theatre – where they had the opportunity to meet other area high school students and learn from working theatre artists including Sound and Lighting Designer, David Wilson.

The Cooking Elective hosted a “Take-a-Chance” lunch on Thursday, April 14 in the VH room, raising over $400! The meal consisted of 3 courses. The starters included tomato and basil bruschetta, Eli and Erik’s Killer Broccoli and Cheese Dip, and garden salad with poppy seed dressing. Main courses featured lemon pasta, chicken pot pie, caramelized onion and leek quiche, and Cajun style onion rings. Winners were then treated to brownies, crostata di zucca, and apple crisp for dessert. All proceeds raised benefit the Waring Diversity Scholarship Fund.

Have you ever thought about how your house affects the planet? That's how energy guru John Livermore began his presentation at Waring School this past Wednesday night in the Theatre. Livermore, a Marblehead resident, had presented earlier in the day during All-School Meeting to students and faculty.

The 2016 Oceans and Climate class took a trip to Woods Hole Massachusetts on Friday, April 8. The day was spent at the SEA Education Association learning about SEA's undergraduate programs and their ongoing research on micro plastics at sea. They also learned about the current research on ocean acidification, a by product of increased carbon dioxide emissions. This presentation was given by Scott C. Doney, a senior scientist and Chair of the Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry department at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Seniors Brianna Cao (Photography), Aidan Wood (Ceramics) and Adele MacEwen (Drawing) represented Waring in the High School Art Competition at Endicott College. Aidan received the Award of Excellence in Ceramics while Adele received the Award of Excellence in Drawing. Their work, along with that of 35 other high schools in the area, will be on display from March 1-April 22 in the Desnoyers Overlook Gallery at Endicott College.

The Waring girls honored one Independent Girls Conference All-Star in Sophomore, Holly Stam, while the boys honored three Mass Bay Independent League All-Stars in Senior Tri-captains, Jacob Vaneck and Dylan Macy, along with Junior point guard Olin Goudey. Tri-Captain Aidan Wood was honored as MBIL B Division MVP.

The Canadian International School of Bejing sent a team of 6 debaters and two coaches to America to participate in debate competitions in New York City and at Harvard University. During their time in America they were hosted by Waring teachers and families who welcomed them both on campus and into their homes. While at Waring our guests participated in All-School Meeting, took part in debate classes, and toured the Peabody Essex Museum.

The Waring boys finished off their season Friday night winning the school's third Mass Bay Independent League-B Division Basketball Championship. Tri-Captain Aidan Wood led the way with 32 points, while senior Dylan Macy (tri-captain) played some of his best defense of the year, collecting 15 rebounds. Senior Nick Wigglesworth had two blocks and added 6 for the Wolfpack, but it was the ball handling of Jacob Vaneck (tri-captain) who controlled the tempo for the Pack all game. His 3 point shot at the half-time buzzer (8 points on the night) became a difference maker down the stretch, as Boston University Academy closed the gap to climb within 6 as time expired. The final score was 58-52.

Waring Sophomore Julia Natale earned the Girl Scout's Gold Award by starting a support group for girls confined to back braces due to scoliosis. Her group, known as EmBRACE, has connected with the Peabody Institute to house the meeting space. You can read the full article about Julia and her achievement in the Danvers Herald.

The Waring boys will take on Boston University Academy in the MBIL Division 2 championship game in the Waring school gym on Friday, February 12th at 4:30.

Waring was the number 1 seed at the end of the regular season, while Boston University Academy was the number 2 seed.

The two teams split games during the regular season. The final will be a hard fought game for sure.

This year for the first time, all three of Waring School’s candidates were accepted after a successful audition into the All-States Chorus Festival. Tano Barendsen-Rossi ’17, Reid Bradshaw ’17, Audrey Buczko ’16 will sing in the All-States Festival in Symphony Hall in March. Likewise, for the second year in a row, Waring students went three-for-three at Junior Districts. Sarah Bradshaw ’20, Ellie Tapping ’20, and Aly Yanishevsky ’19 were all accepted and will join peers from across the northeastern area in a festival later in the Spring. Bravi, tutti.

Waring Debate Society had a successful trip to Newton South High School on Saturday, January 9. Individual speaker awards in a field of 214 debaters went to Bobby Malley (2^nd), Charlotte Bichet (3^rd), and Gareth Buhl (30^th).

Years ago, Waring Junior Ali Estey and her mother Sue ran a “Mitten Tree” asking folks to donate mittens and hats and would pin them to a "tree" in the lobby of their previous school. The mittens and hats would then be donated to children of local low-income families. “I remember we did this in the weeks before Christmas and it was such a fun part of the holiday season for me to see the ‘tree’, which was really just a bunch of branches, filling up with mittens”, said Ali.

Waring seniors Kyle Patrick, Hobart College; Aidan Wood, Hamilton College; Nick Wigglesworth, Brandeis University; and Adele MacEwen, Vassar College were recruited to take their athletic abilities to their respective schools next year where they will compete at the NCAA division 3 level. All three boys were recruited for soccer, while MacEwen was recruited for lacrosse.

On Saturday, December 20th a group of Waring students and parents travelled to Gloucester to volunteer at the Open Door Food Pantry. While there, they helped to serve a community meal to those in need. Before inviting clients in, Open Door Executive Director Julie LaFontaine quoted poet Miller Williams saying:

“Have compassion for everyone you meet, even if they don't want it. What seems conceit, bad manners, or cynicism is always a sign of things no ears have heard, no eyes have seen. You do not know what wars are going on down there where the spirit meets the bone.”

The Waring Boys managed to win the Mass Bay Independent League, knocking off Newman in the final by a score of 3-1 after being down 1-0 at half time.

This year's team produced 5 MBIL All-Stars: Senior Strikers - Aidan Wood and Kyle Patrick, Senior Centerback - Nick Wigglesworth, Central Midfielder - Jacob Vaneck, and Junior Centerback - Mike Ballin.

The Waring Debate Society had their best showing of the year at the Lincoln-Sudbury tournament on Saturday, December 5. In a field of 100 debate teams (200 debaters), our teams of Jack & Grace and Bobby & Charlotte took 3rd and 4th place respectively. For both teams, Waring came within one ballot of winning the tournament outright! In addition to that success, individual speaker awards in the field of 200 debaters went to Bobby Malley (3rd), Sascha Denby (6th), and Jack Kelly (13th).

Senior Forward Aidan Wood has been named a 2015 Salem News Boys Soccer All-Star. In addition to this accomplishment, Aidan was named the Mass Bay Independent League MVP. This week, the National Association of Independent Schools is hosting a Student Diversity Leadership Conference in Tampa, FL. Students from across the country in grades nine-12 have gathered to share dialogue focused on self-reflecting, forming allies, and building community. Waring students Jack Kelly, Alexandra Kenney, and Grace Panetta along with Director of Admissions, Shelley Morgan, are in attendance to share and develop strategies that they can bring back to Waring.

Waring Debate had a wonderful weekend with 23 students debating in two states. Locally, at Lexington High School, debaters had a regional competition at the novice and varsity levels. Three of Waring’s Varsity teams had winning records: Bobby & Charlotte (4W-1L), Sam & Liam (3W-2L), and Alice and Sasha (3W-2L). Also debating in Varsity were Jaita & Gabby, Alexandra & Grace, and Ilana & Julia.

Congratulations to Waring students Reid Bradshaw ‘17, tenor; Tano Barendsen-Rossi ‘18, tenor; and Audrey Buczko ’16, alto, who were selected to sing in the 2016 MMEA Northeastern District Festival. These students were also nominated, on the grounds of exceptional auditions, to try out for the 2016 MMEA All-State Festival & Concert in January.

Congratulations to the Waring Boys Varsity Soccer Team for their spectacular win against Newman School, 3-1 on Wednesday, Novermber 4th! As reported in the Salem News, "Senior captain Aidan Wood scored two goals and added one assist and freshman Konrad Ellis scored once. Senior captain Kyle Patrick had two assists for Waring, which trailed 1-0 at the half."

On Saturday, October 31 a group of Waring students and parents joined students from other schools and youth workers from the Food Project at Long Hill for a day of volunteering at the farm. They helped prepare the farm for winter in various ways. Students and parents who attended were Mikey Ballin, Amy Ballin and Tim Greiner; Kyle, Elizabeth, Jim and Stephanie Patrick and their Angers student Lise; Hattie, Ian and Mary Cookson; Cilla Brooks and Angers teacher Marie Christine; Susan and Henry Gribbell; Irena and Lucy Sinclair; Maura and JoAnne McCarthy; Jaqui Jutras and Ann Marie Viglione; Karl and Maia Buxbaum; and Sheila Adams.

On Friday and Saturday, October 30 and 31 three Waring debate teams competed with distinction at a tournament that saw 82 teams (164 debaters) from New England, New York, New Jersey, and Wisconsin debating six rounds and clearing to the sweet 16. In that challenging competition, Jack Kelley & Grace Panetta cleared to elimination rounds, and Jack won the trophy as 4th individual speaker in the tournament.

Tristan Horan & Sascha Denby and Alice Sullivan & Sam Lincoln also competed with distinction at the tournament. Four Waring parents judged at the competition: Max Kelly, Bill Lincoln, Nicie Panetta, and Rob Stuart (P ‘15).

Several Waring Students have been selected for the Crane Estate Student Art Show at Castle Hill. Participating students include Christianna Moestue, Adele MacEwen, Ellie Wright, Dylan Macy, Chloe Hershenson, Grace Gustaferro, Brianna Cao, Hope Younger and Brooks Richon.

Lynn Lyons, a pyschotherapist and co-author of "Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents: 7 Ways to Stop the Worry Cycle and Raise Courageous and Independent Children" will speak at Waring School on Monday, November 9.

Waring Debate opened its varsity season at the Bronx High School of Science in New York City on October 16-18 competing against 450 debaters from all over the country. Bronx Science is one of 9 specialized high schools in the NYC public school system.

Alumni Parent Randi Mitchell was honored at Waring School's Convocation ceremony in September with the Richard G. Prouty Award for outstanding volunteer service to the school. The award, named for Board Chair Dick Prouty, is given to parents "whose commitment and service to the school is exemplary".

Waring senior Gabby D'Ambrosio was recently awarded a Commonwealth of Massachusetts Senate commendation for her "outstanding commitment and dedication to community as the Director of ASL Sports."

Waring School students were honored to hear Le Ly Hayslip, author of "When Heaven and Earth Changed Places: A Vietnamese Woman's Journey from War to Peace", speak at All School Meeting on October 14th. Her message of taking personal ownership for creating a wise, compassionate, and peaceful world as future leaders inspired much discussion among students.

Waring French Department Chair Christiane Jedryka-Taylor was invited to address the Club Richelieu, an internaitonal club of fancophones, for the October meeting of the North Shore organization in Salem, MA.

In a show of philanthropic unity for our school, the Waring School Board of Trustees and the Waring Faculty have both attained 100% participation in the 2015-2016 Waring Fund the same day! We are very grateful for the generosity and vision of our hard-working faculty and dedicated trustees. It is the first time that both consituencies have made their Waring Fund commitments so early in the school year. Bravo!

Maintaining Waring School's philanthropic momentum of several years, we have announced the 2015-16 goal for the Waring Fund at $385,000. As in past years, over 80% of the goal is expected to be raised through Leadership gifts of $1,000 and up. With your help, we can set another milestone for Waring!

Head of School, Tim Bakland announced today that Robert Malley has been named a Commended Student in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by Tim to this scholastically talented senior.

On Friday, September 4th Maritime Gloucester held their annual gala featuring a video premier of Waring students in John Wigglesworth's and Joshua Scott-Fishburn's Endterm from the 2015 school year.

On Tuesday, April 28, five Waring students won 6 awards in the High School Division of the 19th Annual Teen Poetry Contest at the Beverly Public Library. There were over 500 entries submitted to the contest but only 22 finalists were selected (top 4.4% of entries.) Congratulations to our winners!

Congratulations to Junior Gabby D’Ambrosio who was selected for the Joanie Vaughan Ingraham Spirit Award! Gabby was recognized for her remarkable volunteer work over the past 5 years at The Children’s Center for Communication, Beverly School for the Deaf.

The awards will be presented on May 2 at the 17th Annual Spring Soiree Benefit Auction at the Double Tree Hotel in Danvers, MA. In addition to her volunteer work at CCCBSD, Gabby serves as the 2015-16 Director Elect for ASL Sports Inc

The Waring School Debate Society finished a very strong year by taking third place in the Massachusetts State Public Forum Debate tournament, held at Boston Latin School on Saturday, March 28.

Core student Cole Sauder presented his Fair Trade Challenge at All School Meeting on Wednesday, March 4. Cole is challenging the Waring community to watch The Dark Side of Chocolate. After watching the film, map your “Slavery Footprint” to see how many slaves are working for you. Ben and Jerry’s will be sponsoring the follow up meeting on Tuesday, March 31 and will be handing out ice cream to those who participate!

Can you count how many days you were a Fair Trade consumer?

On March 20, Alumna Maggie Sheetz ('12) hosted members of Waring's Folk Band for a 2-hour recording session at Emerson College in Boston. Maggie is studying Sound Design/Audio Post Production at Emerson, and she was on assignment to record a song with two or more different instruments as a live mix in real time (no editing in post).

Brooks Richon and Nick Wigglesworth were accepted as our Breadloaf representatives for this year. Breadloaf is the New England Young Writers’ Conference held at Middlebury each year. Applications are evaluated in a blind reading and each school is allowed up to 2 attendees. Congratulations Brooks and Nick!

Waring Writing chair and Debate coach, Tim Averill, was published in this winter's issue of Rostrum magazine. In Tim's article titled Meeting Alf, he "recalls a chance encounter with the former Governor of Kansas, leading to one very memorable evening–and a lifetime of inquiry." Rostrum is a publication of The National Speech & Debate Association. Congratulations Tim!

Fourteen members of the Waring Debate Society competed at the Harvard National Forensics Tournament, held on the weekend of February 14-16 in Cambridge, MA at Harvard University. The tournament was held despite incredibly challenging weather conditions that led to the cancellation of debates on Sunday, with final elimination rounds on Monday.

The French Poetry Recitation Contest took place on Friday, February 6 2015. Our outside judges were members of the French Consulate in Boston, headed by Emmanuelle Marchand, the cultural attaché. The French department would like to thank them for their presence, their support, and the books they offered the winners.

The entire school gathered in the Polygon to listen to the 37 finalists who represented their French classes. This year again, judges were impressed by the quality of Waring students’ French.

The Waring School Math Circle took the Intermediate Math League of Eastern Massachusetts competitions by storm winning 1st place last semester. The team included Maia Buxbaum, George Cameron, Pearce Crocker, Swara Douglas, Anand Fedele, Phoebe Holz, Julia Kautz, Jack Martin, JP Penzaloza, and Benny Weedon. Congratulations to our rising Math Stars, their coach Graham Rosby, and our Math Circle TA's Gabe Weedon and Audrey Buczko on this achievement!

Congratulations to Junior Grace Panetta who earned the trophy as fourth place speaker (of 204), and was the top female speaker in the debate tournament! The tournament attracted 102 of the best teams in the country. Also, congratulations to the teams of Jack Kelly & Bobby Malley and Grace Panetta & Charlotte Bichet who both won trophies for elimination rounds.

The Waring Madrigals and Director, Shaylor Lindsay, are excited to be competing in the N.E. Voices High School a cappella festival on Friday January 30th at 7 p.m. at Wilmington Middle School in Wilmington.

On Friday, December 12, Waring teamed up with Music for Food in a Soirée that raised over $1400 for Beverly Bootstraps. Mateo Lincoln ('15) along with several others, helped to organize the concert and fundraising efforts.

On Saturday, December 6, fourteen debaters from the Waring Debate Society traveled to Lincoln-Sudbury High School to compete in Public Forum Debate on the topic: Resolved - On balance, the benefits of Genetically Modified Foods outweigh the harms. The tournament attracted 200 debaters from 20 schools.

Today, the Cooking Elective put on a "Take-A-Chance" Thanksgiving Banquet to raise money and awareness for the Beverly Bootstraps Food Pantry. Participants purchased tickets for a chance to win a home cooked meal prepared for them during elective period and served during lunch. Entertainment was provided by the Folk Band Elective who serenaded guests while they ate. The event raised over $350 for the local charity.

On Saturday, November 15, six Waring students were accepted to the MMEA Northeastern Districts Festival which will take place in January. Students include Reid Bradshaw '17 for tenor, Audrey Buczko '16 for alto, Tristan Horan '17 for bass, Mateo Lincoln '15 for bass, Brooks Richon '16 for violin (accepted as concertmaster), and Lucy Sinclair '17 for soprano.

Junior Aidan Wood was selected to the New England Prep School Soccer Association Junior All-Star game that took place at Loomis Chaffe on Sunday, November 15.

Waring School is fortunate to have a terrific group of current and past parents volunteering on behalf of the Waring Fund. The 2014-15 Leadership Gifts Group includes John Cabot, Christina Comparato, Jonathan Golding, David McDonald, Stephanie Patrick, Jill Sullivan, and Jonathan Weedon.

As fate would have it, Waring and St. Andrews would draw each other again in this year's NEPSAC first round match. Only this year there would be no last minute heroic performances reminiscent of last year's match up, where Waring fought back from being down 4-0, tieing the game late in regulation, winning the game in penalty kicks... No, the scoreline would read much different, as St. Andrews had something to prove after last year's defeat, and they did it in a dominating fashion.

Adrienne Ogle (’11) has been awarded the Pamela Daniels Fellowship at Wellesley College. The fellowship allows for seniors to fund their own personal projects to develop and solidify their identity as “maverick scholars”. Each year students are chosen for this prize but in the true spirit of innovation, Adrienne entered the pool with a group of fellow filmmakers. The six students are the first group to be chosen for the fellowship and their proposal focused on the power and stimulation of collaboration. We are looking forward to seeing the series of short films created by Adrienne and her classmates, a project that with the help of the $3,500 prize money will bolster their experience as professional filmmakers.

Coach Jan Lindsay knew what she was doing when she subbed Sammy Stewart (Alum '07 and Boy's Assistant Coach) into the game with under 10 minutes to play in the second half. Sammy scored on a beautifully placed corner kick by Dean of Faculty, Francis Schaeffer, to put the faculty up 1-0. "I remember watching Sammy play when he was a student at Waring," said Lindsay. "He was a special player, and obviously still is. We needed a spark, and Sammy provided it for us."

For the MBIL and IGC champions, it was a tough defeat. "We had high hopes this year," said senior Nat Lyman.

The faculty are now 3-0 in the annual series.

The Waring boys will take on St. Andrews of Barrington Rhode Island on Wednesday, November 12, at 2:00pm. The game will be played at St. Andrews, the third seed in the tournament.

The weather will be chilly, but the game is scheduled as planned. It should be an exciting match, featuring our IGC and MBIL student champions vs. a faculty-senior parent team of sophisticated and highly accomplished adults.

How does that equate to an exciting match? Come cheer on either side at 3:30pm today on the Mine Field and find out.

The Waring School boys varsity soccer team defeated Cambridge School of Weston 3-1 on Wednesday to become champions of the Mass Bay Independant League. Waring won the title at home in front of a packed crowd of Waring and CSW fans. Senior Isaac Stuart scored once and junior Aidan Wood scored twice, while recording an assist, all within the first half. The second half saw Waring continue to dominate the game with the majority of possession as senior Nat Lyman and junior Nick Wigglesworth controlled the middle of the field. The Waring defense, led by seniors Adrien Hupin and Isaac Ogle, snuffed out all but one late CSW attack. A true team effort, every member of the team played a role in the victory.

The Waring School's girls soccer team captured their second straight Independent Girls Conference title with a 1-0 win over Montrose on Election Day. Sophomore Amanda Adams scored the game's only goal late in the first half, and freshman goalkeeper Holly Stam along with the backline of freshman Grace Symes, sophomore Merilyn Hinrichs, senior Brooklyn Stam and junior Grace Gustaferro stymied a ferocious Montrose attack.

Group 4 student Mateo Lincoln was featured in the Newburyport Current for his work to organize "Music for Food: A Night of Hot Classical and Cool Jazz". Mateo, with the help of Waring music teacher Kristen Miller, organized a benefit concert that will donate 100% of the money raised to the Pettengill House food pantry in Salisbury. The program will include Waring students Cordelia Tapping singing jazz, Brooks Richon playing violin, and Mateo playing piano. You can read the full article here »
