Waring Parents’ Group Hosts Sustainability Speaker

04/21/2016

Have you ever thought about how your house affects the planet? That's how energy guru John Livermore began his presentation at Waring School this past Wednesday night in the Theatre. Livermore, a Marblehead resident, had presented earlier in the day during All-School Meeting to students and faculty.

As the designer and builder of the first rehabbed home in the Commonwealth that produces more energy than it consumes, Livermore spoke for nearly an hour on how he turned his 70’s era conventional raised ranch into a net positive energy building. Livermore highlighted the building science behind his design – explaining his use of insulation, triple-pane windows, new lighting, a solar system and more. Livermore moved from “being overwhelmed to being empowered”, and aligning his “way of living with his values.” Quoting Thoreau, he asked, “What’s the use of a fine house if you haven’t got a tolerable planet to put it on?”

The talk was organized by the Waring Parents’ Group and the Waring Sustainability Committee and Elective. If you missed it, ask your son or daughter about his presentation at All-School Meeting this past Wednesday!
