"It's hard to pick just one favorite Waring experience! A couple favorites include: being a writing TA for 6th and 7th grade students. Helping lead a Shakespeare endterm in which we put on a performance of Much Ado About Nothing. Learning that I actually WAS a science person when taking junior year physics. Discovering my love of both admiring and creating visual art in my Waring art classes and endterms throughout the years."

"It's hard to overstate the closeness of the community across grades. Every really gets to spend time with everyone else, across all grades and classes. At lunches students will on occasion voluntarily eat lunch with faculty to continue a discussion they were having in class, or just for fun. The campus is a free-flowing place where all the students can be anywhere with anybody."

"Not having grades sort of shatters this hierarchy that is created with grades. Where you identify with a letter or a number. It creates equality and community, where everyone is rooting for everyone else."

"Waring has become my home over the past 7 years, and it has made me fall in love with education and learning. I couldn't imagine my life without Waring and I could not recommend it more to any new searching students."

"At Waring, the lack of grades makes me listen more in a lecture not because I need to do well on some assessment but because it is genuinely thought provoking. The incentive to study is entirely based off of your passion of learning. Receiving detailed thoughts on projects, homework and tests shows just how much your teachers are invested in you and your learning."

"Having evals instead of grades is way more humanizing. You're seen as a complex human being who is valued for their effort rather than just being a letter or a number. It also builds fabulous student/teacher relationships."

"Written evals take into account every aspect of me as a student, focusing on how I can improve my overall performance in class discussions, writing pieces, and participation/observation in general. In my experience, numeric grades look at a student's material output, telling them only that of which they are doing poorly and/or well on. Competition becomes a motivator; if I know what my friend's grade is in some subject, I can easily make a direct comparison. That is a fault of my own, however I recognize that it's shallow and doesn't mean much. I appreciate the personification written evals provide. There is no feeling of competition or rivalry, giving room to personal growth."

"A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to talk about my research interests at an all school meeting. After this meeting, my inbox was flooded with messages from community members of all ages- each with questions or comments regarding my presentation. This moment stood out to me in particular because I had never really been in an environment like that before; one where everyone was so genuinely curious about everything!"
