Waring School Places Third at State Debate Tournament

04/3/2015

The Waring School Debate Society finished a very strong year by taking third place in the Massachusetts State Public Forum Debate tournament, held at Boston Latin School on Saturday, March 28.

In order to compete in the state tournament, students had to qualify and there were 116 students who did, the 58 best teams in the state. Waring’s team of Jack Kelly & Bobby Malley had a 4-1 record going into elimination debates and won their quarterfinal debate, losing only in semifinals on a split (1-2) decision of the judges to the eventual winner of the state championship. In addition, Jack Kelly won the trophy for 4th place speaker of the 116 varsity debaters who competed. The team of Grace Panetta & Sam Lincoln also had a very strong record, winning three and losing two of the preliminary debates.

Judging and coaching for Waring were Nicie Panetta and Bill Lincoln. Coach Tim Averill, who had to watch from France, was delighted with their support and the fine job the students did.

Waring Debate is looking forward to another strong year in 2015-16! They will celebrate this year at the Debate Banquet on April 30.
