Waring Senior named National Merit Finalist

03/1/2019

Gareth Buhl, a senior at Waring School, has been named a finalist in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Competition.

More than 1.6 million students entered the competition by taking the PSAT, National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in the fall of 2017. Less than one percent were named semifinalists and even fewer (just 7,500 students) were named finalists last month.

In addition to his impressive score on the qualifying test, Gareth’s academic transcript, National Merit Scholarship Application, and SAT scores were considered.

National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced this spring.

Gareth lives in Ipswich and has attended Waring School since 8th grade. He is captain of Waring’s basketball and lacrosse teams, the school’s Teaching Assistant for Group 1 Writing, a state-tournament-qualifying debater, and an actor in school plays. He holds a black belt in kempo karate and also plays the bagpipes.
