9th Graders Depart Orléans, Arrive in Caen

March 17, 2026

March 12 + 13

These were the final two days the group attended Saint-Charles. The group did sneak in a visit to the Maison de Jeanne d’Arc, an ancient home that she slept in back in 1492. On Friday, we celebrated another birthday as Joe turned 15! Across these two days, many fun activities took place. The group learned some martial arts, produced podcasts, participated in a match au foot, and made crepes! Students also continued attending the classes of their correspondents, as well as their academic work.

March 16

It was a bittersweet day as the group said goodbye to their correspondents in the morning, following a final weekend accompanying them. After a short (3.5 hour) bus ride, the students arrived at the Brit Hôtel Caen Nord – Memorial. Following the arrival, the group picnicked before visiting Caen Memorial. Students learned details of WW2 with a highlight on the occupation of, resistance in, and liberation of France. Due to the nature of the museum, minimal photos were taken (check out the tank, though!) After some down time, the group dined together at the hotel restaurant, before heading to bed.

March 17

After eating breakfast at the hotel, the group departed for Mont-St-Michel. Over 1000 years old, Mont-St-Michel can accurately be described as an island fortress. Aubert d’Avranches kickstarted construction in the 8th century after the archangel Michel instructed him to in a vision, three separate times. The most popular attraction in France (outside of Paris), the students had several hours to explore the many dazzling views and shops on the island. Thank you to our hotel, for providing us all three meals, and to our bus driver, for expertly navigating the narrow streets of France!
