TUITION ASSISTANCE

Waring’s goal for tuition assistance is to equitably and consistently bridge the gap between the cost of tuition and what a family can afford to pay. About 40% of our families receive annual financial aid grants. We understand and appreciate the financial commitment families undertake in deciding to send their children to Waring School. Although paying for education is first and foremost the responsibility of a family, we devote significant funds each year to a financial aid budget that helps assist in covering the cost of school.

To help us objectively assess what a family is able to contribute to its student(s) education expenses, we use Clarity to evaluate all candidates equally. To make our final financial aid award decisions, we use the Clarity figures as the baseline for our own additional review, taking into consideration our total financial aid budget, other information we may have collected, our school’s policies and priorities, and the needs of our entire applicant pool.

FAQs

Should I apply for tuition assistance?

First, consider the total annual cost of a Waring education. Consider tuition, tuition insurance, and miscellaneous fees. Then, calculate your ability to cover this cost. Consider all sources of income, adjust priorities and spending as able, and review assets available for use. If after this analysis you believe you cannot cover all of the educational expenses, we encourage you to apply for financial aid.

What payment options are available?

Waring offers three payment options:

  1. One single payment due in August
  2. Two payments–one due in August and one in December
  3. Ten payments beginning in June and ending in March or April. If you have a student returning the following year to Waring, we offer a “skip March” option to accommodate the reservation deposit payment due in March. We take total tuition minus financial aid and reservation deposit and divide that total by ten equal payments.

Does applying for tuition assistance affect school admission decisions?

No. Admissions decisions are made without regard to financial need.

Who can apply for tuition assistance?

Any student currently enrolled or any new applicant for admission to Waring can apply for financial aid. Generally, aid will only be awarded to current students enrolled for the following school year when their tuition account is current.

How are tuition assistance grants determined?

Waring School requires that families submit an application through Clarity.

All financial aid awards are made on the basis of demonstrated need. The Financial Aid Committee does not consider carryover business losses, credit card debt, or rental depreciation in calculating financial need. Waring School uses the Clarity recommendation as a guideline in determining the financial aid award to be offered. If one spouse is unemployed, is not disabled, and does not have extenuating circumstances, an adjustment will be made to the income of the family for the calculation of need.

However, financial aid awards may be limited by financial availability of Waring funds.

In addition to the tuition assistance application, what other documents do I need to submit?

You will need to submit:

  • If Self Employed send the first two pages of your IRS Form 1040 and Schedules C&E if applicable
  • A complete copy of your Federal Tax Return, including 1040s, Schedules A, B, C, E & F, K-1s, and 1120s
  • A copy of your W2 and/or 1099 for all jobs worked
  • A complete copy of your federal tax return including all schedules and business tax returns, such as K1’s and 1120 for Corporations

These documents will be needed for all adults in the household. If tax return paperwork is already on file with SSS, there is no need to resubmit these documents. Tax returns and W2/1099’s should be submitted no later than April 15. Upon review of your application, additional documents may be requested.

What if my tax return has not been filed in time to submit it with my tuition assistance application?

It is recommended that you make an appointment with your tax consultant early in order to ensure your return is complete by April 15. Tax returns must be received for your application to be considered complete and all awards granted are contingent upon review of these documents. We award provisionally based on prior year financials and current year income documentation. When tax returns are received, awards are confirmed.

What if I have children at other schools that charge tuition?

If you have children at other K‐12 schools that charge tuition, the cost of their education is considered as part of Waring’s review of your situation. If you are applying for aid from Waring School, we assume you are doing so at all schools.

College tuition is considered an investment rather than an expense, as it generally pays for itself with higher future wages. As such, many families and college students will utilize federally subsidized loans, as well as aid that may be available at the college level.

What happens in cases of parental divorce or separation?

Regardless of parents’ marital status, the School considers both biological parents to be responsible for their child’s education. Therefore both biological parents must complete financial aid applications.

What happens if one or both divorced parents have remarried?

In cases of remarriage, all adults in each household must submit their information in the application. In the case of a step‐parent, their income and assets are to be included in the application and we will consider obligations a step‐parent has towards his/her own natural children.

What allowances are made if one parent cannot be located or refuses to complete the application?

Waring understands that some family situations can be very difficult. In such cases, a letter may be submitted to Waring from a priest, school official, social worker, or attorney confirming that the other biological parent cannot be located or refuses to participate in any aspects of their child’s life. The letter writer cannot be a relative of the applicant. The letter must state the following, as applicable:

  • The whereabouts of the other biological parent is unknown.
  • The other biological parent has provided no support and has had no contact with the family for at least two years.
  • It is in the family’s best interest not to have further contact with the other biological parent.
  • Any other extenuating circumstances that the individual believes Waring should consider.

This letter should be submitted directly to Waring School, Financial Aid Office, 35 Standley Street, Beverly, MA 01915.

Is there a limit to the tuition assistance available?

Yes. Even with Waring’s generous allocation of funds, the school cannot guarantee that all demonstrated needs will be met. Waring gives priority to returning students, siblings of existing or past Waring students, and children or grandchildren of Waring alumni. We also endeavor to award grants to families who contribute to the diversity of the community.

Is aid awarded for one year only or for each year my child attends Waring?

Tuition assistance awards are for one year only. Families on aid must reapply for each subsequent year they wish to receive such assistance. Normally, families currently on aid will receive grants of similar amounts in future years unless their financial situation changes. Under such circumstances, aid may be increased or reduced if the Financial Aid Committee deems such action appropriate.

If my family has an unexpected financial emergency, can I apply for financial aid after the deadline?

We understand that sometimes a family’s financial situation can change unexpectedly. While funds are more limited for these types of grants, we encourage you to apply if needed. When applying late, please notify Will Potter at wpotter@waringschool.org or (978) 927-8793 ext. 331 that you are submitting a late application.

Can I still apply for tuition assistance after the deadline?

Yes, but the bulk of financial aid funds are utilized in meeting the demonstrated needs of families applying by the filing deadline. However, funds may become available for grants subsequent to the deadline. Thus, if you are truly in need, we encourage you to apply as we may still be able to help. Late applications that are complete and submitted by April 15 will be reviewed by the Financial Aid Committee in May. Those submitted/completed after April 15, but before June 30, will normally be reviewed in early August. We encourage families to pay all required tuition payments pending notification of awards in case sufficient aid is not available.

When will I know if I have been awarded tuition assistance?

Applications will only be considered if they have been filled out completely and all requested documents have been submitted. For financial aid applications for returning students submitted by the due date of December 31, a financial aid decision letter will sent to you by the end of February. For new students, financial aid applications are submitted by January 15, and award letters are included in your acceptance package.

Can I appeal the tuition assistance decision if I believe it is insufficient?

You may appeal the tuition assistance decision if your financial situation has changed or you believe the Financial Aid Committee may have misunderstood your current situation. In such cases, you may be asked for additional documentation. Please contact Will Potter at wpotter@waringschool.org to request a review of your aid decision.

Will my family have to repay the tuition assistance?

No, Tuition assistance is a grant, not a loan. If at some future date your family’s financial situation improves, we hope you will consider making a donation to the School to help enable other deserving students to attend Waring.

Will my tuition assistance status and financial information remain confidential?

Waring School regards all financial information as confidential and expects the family to do the same.

What if I have additional questions?
