Core Launches Rocket and Studies Newton's Laws

10/21/2014

Core Investigates The Laws of Motion through fun projects and demonstrations.
On Friday, October 14, the minefield buzzed with anticipation as Core Science gathered to launch a model rocket.

In previous classes, students investigated Newton's 3rd law of motion: every action has an equal and opposite reaction. The discussion of force and momentum led to a series of activities that incorporated soccer, roller blades, a skateboard, bouncy balls of different masses, and finally, the rocket launch.

"3, 2, 1…" the students shouted in unison. The rocket shot into the air, passing the treetops before deploying its parachute. Students cheered as they chased after the falling projectile. To follow up, each student made his or her own "Newton Scooter," a vehicle propelled by action and reaction forces. Several scooters will be on display at Core Night on November 21st.
