Waring’s novice Debate teams started strong at their season opener held at Arlington High School last Saturday. They competed in a field of 189 debaters from schools all over Massachusetts. Every Waring team won debates, with some placing in the very top tier of the competition.
Debating for Waring was Phoebe Holz & Betta Tham, Arion Carraher-Kang & Tucker Smith, Mattie Knowles & Charlotte Smit, Quincy Adams & Turner Britz, Belle Leonard & Swara Douglas, and Elle Zymba & Sophie Vaneck. The team of Phoebe and Betta went undefeated and placed sixth of the ninety-five teams. Speaker recognition goes to Phoebe (4th place), Elle & Sophie (tied for 13th), and Tucker (17th) all of whom placed in the top 10% of novice speakers. Special thanks to judges Richard Stuart, Stefan Karlberg, Julia Kautz, and John Knowles. Waring debate continues its season on Saturday, October 21 at Revere High School and on Friday and Saturday, October 27 & 28 at Manchester Essex Regional High School.
