Sarah Obeng

Class of 2020
  • Hometown: Wilmington, MA.
  • Time at Waring: 2 years!
  • Favorite Class: I honestly love all of my classes equally.
  • Favorite Waring experience: On Earth Day, we had a day dedicated to sustainability and learning more about climate change and how to do our part in helping the environment. During the last All-School Meeting, we had a sing along related to the Earth. I think my favorite moments of being at Waring have to do with togetherness and the overall atmosphere in that moment. This was one of those times: looking around and seeing everyone around me relaxed, singing, giggling, and swaying along to the lyrics, as we went through endless rounds of “I Love the Mountains.”
  • Why no grades: I used to define myself by what my grades were, and I put so much unnecessary pressure on myself because of that. Having narrative evaluations tells me what I can work on and helps me to set healthier and more sufficient academic goals for myself.
  • Favorite book and/or film: The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas (both the book and the film).
  • Why French: I like the fact that the only foreign language taught is French because it goes beyond the barriers of a classroom. French is spoken in All-School Meetings, other classes, and it unifies Waring as a community.
  • After-school activities: In the fall, I run cross country. It was the first sport that I joined at Waring last year. I love the feeling of being on a team, and it definitely helped me in making friends and getting to know other students more-- as did theatre, which I do in winter and spring, which is such a great experience-- both acting and tech. It takes you out of your comfort zone but also to a place of familiarity-- it’s also very fun!
  • Our community: Waring is a place where everyone knows your name, and you know their's-- its a place where we call teachers by their first names and get the chance to establish strong relationships with each other. Coming into the school at 11th grade, I was worried that I wouldn’t make many friends or any at all, but everyone here is so friendly and outgoing that I feel like I’ve made lifelong friends in only a year.
