Gyani Pradhan Wong Ah Sui

Class of 2020
  • Hometowns: Sikkim and Mauritius
  • Time at Waring: Three years
  • Favorite Class: Before coming to Waring, I had begun to pay less and less attention to anything related to math or science as I delved deeper into writing and boxed myself up as a non-science person. My junior year, however, was an awakening that I wasn’t expecting. I dove right into Physics with an open mind and found it to be the best class I’ve ever had in my life. Francis’ passion for the subject, in turn, got me to put forward my best effort. This translated seamlessly into Precalculus, which I was able to complete at the honors level. And even before coming to Waring, I had always loved to write. Writing and Humanities are two subjects that I have a deep interest in. The way they connect to the medium of filmmaking is perfect. I love the discussions we are able to have about craft and ideas in both classes.
  • Favorite Waring experience: Junior Trip and Canada Endterm Trip.
  • Why no grades: Because I am valued for what I do as a well-rounded individual. Not solely based on a test I take.
  • Favorite book and/or film: Akira and Interstellar.
  • Why French: On a personal level, it helps me get back in touch with my roots in Mauritius. French is one of the official languages and is spoken widely across the globe. We learn about cultures around the world and are able to tap into a whole new way of thinking by switching to a different language. Thinking in French is not the same as thinking in English.
  • After-school activities: Filmmaking Elective, Soccer Captain, Lacrosse Captain (started in the 10th grade), Waring Inclusion and Diversity Alliance, Yearbook, Core Writing TA.
  • Our community: Waring students wear many different hats for different situations. They are multifaceted and engage in all of their interests–be it in sports, academics, theater, art, or anything else. Our small size allows us to know everybody’s names and interests. Our common passion for learning is what brings us together, and we share a close sense of belonging.
