Dolly Farha

Class of 2020
  • Hometown: Wichita, KS, and Gloucester, MA.
  • Time at Waring: Six Years (since 7th Grade).
  • Favorite Class: My favorite class at Waring is Humanities. Combining geography, English, and history provides a unique perspective on humanity. I have found that learning factual history is easier when you are able to connect it to a piece of personal literature.
  • Favorite Waring experience: Junior Trip. My grade and I travelled around France for three weeks, speaking the language, eating baguettes, and visiting the most beautiful cathedrals. Without Waring’s French program, experiences like Junior Trip, the Montreal Trip, or Angers wouldn’t be possible.
  • Why no grades: When I attended a graded school in Wichita, I was struck by how often I was checking my grades. It became an obsession for me, and I began to value myself based on a letter grade. Without grades, I learned more about myself, how I communicate with others, and my presence in the classroom. Overall, a non-graded curriculum has given me the tools to grow inside and outside of the classroom.
  • Favorite book and/or film: Currently, my favorite book is Patience by John Coates, and my all-time favorite movie is Walk the Line directed by James Mangold, though both are subject to change.
  • Why French: Waring is a bilingual school, so each and every student is required to take French with the goal of earning fluidity (if not fluency) in the language by the end of their time here. Personally, French has become important to me and I hope to continue my studies during college. The ability to travel to different countries across the world and speak smoothly with the natives is a lovely feeling.
  • After-school activities: I have been involved in theater since the start of my time at Waring. During high school, I have participated in almost three seasons of theater every year. I always knew of my passion for theater, but Waring gave me the techniques to hone that passion and become an artist.
  • Our community: When I visited Waring, I was struck by how many people came to talk to me. Teachers and students alike were all interested in meeting a possible new student. If that doesn’t show you how familiar our community is, then take this as your guide. Waring is a place that cares about creating a home for each and every student, whether that be in the theater, on the game field, or in the south of France. Our academic interests range from an excellent course in Physics to Humanities courses ranging from the Medieval period to modern day America, not to mention our acclaimed bilingual French program. So, if you are interested in casual soccer games, discussions about mythology, or 3-D printers, come and visit! I can’t wait to meet you!
