Science

Through a genuine exploration of important concepts and major paradigms, the Waring science curriculum is designed to foster curiosity and an understanding of the natural world. All science courses at Waring incorporate an appropriate blend of lecture, laboratory work, field experience, hands-on activity and problem sets. Throughout the curriculum, students design experiments, test hypotheses, and engage in discussion of theoretical constructs and related historical perspectives. Besides an in-depth understanding of the natural world, we hope that students will exit the program with the necessary skills, literacy, and motivation to pursue successful study of science beyond the secondary school level.

Instructional goals of the science program are supported by the strategic use of science journals, newspapers, computer technology, and traditional textbooks. Whenever possible, students attend off-campus lecture series and participate in both regional and national conferences.

CORE Science (grades 6 & 7) alternates each year between a study of physical and biological science and is a prelude to the secondary school program. After CORE the sequence for the remainder of the curriculum is as follows: Group 1 (8th grade): Earth Science; Group 2 (9th grade): Biology; Group 3 (10th grade): Chemistry; Group 4 (11th grade): Physics; Group 5 (12th grade): Advanced Topics In Biology.
