College Counseling
Charting a Course Beyond Graduation
The overall aim of college counseling at Waring is to assist soon to be graduates in the planning of the next phase of their educational journeys. Since the vast majority of Waring graduates choose to attend college or university, most of our emphasis and time is invested in supporting the selection and application process. Nevertheless, our goal for all Waring graduates is to make applying to college part of a larger plan that gives meaning and purpose to the choices that they will eventually make.
The Headmaster and College Counselor work together, walking each student and family through the selection and application process. Their approach is two-fold:
- To help students discover and apply to colleges that both match and widen their promise and interests
- To help colleges understand the rigor, depth, and breadth of the Waring curriculum as well as the student’s achievement within it
Counseling is done on both a one-on-one and group basis. Conversations encourage students to clarify their interests and goals on a range of topics, including academics, campus life, athletics, and geographic location. Discussions also cover the particulars, such as creating a college list, standardized tests, the transcript, applications, essays, and recommendations. The underlying purpose is to help students shape decisions about their education after Waring, whether they go directly to college or take a gap year.
For almost 30 years, Waring graduates have been accepted to and have attended a wide range of colleges and universities. Our graduates report how well prepared they were for rigorous college-level work and how smooth their transition was from Waring to the college environment. They consistently report notable success in the following areas:
- Challenging course loads
- Active participation in classroom discussions
- Self-directed studies
- Writing in every discipline
- Working with primary source materials
- Foreign travel and study
- Meaningful relationships with professors
- Leadership roles across the spectrum of campus activities
